Who are the Celts?
Due to the variety of meanings surrounding the words "Celtic" and "Celts," it is important to establish a solid definition that will be used throughout this project. I use Celtic in this piece to designate early medieval, early modern, and modern traditions, including myths, legends, music, and craftwork in metal and textiles, especially in Ireland, Wales, and Scotland. This also includes Brittany (France) and anywhere that the styles and practices from those regions has been transplanted to (Wells, 1998). Another important thing to add is that the French refer to the Celts as Keltoi, a Greek term spread through the south of France (specifically the Marseille area). This is the first known term of "Celtic" used throughout Europe, although now the French refer to the Celts as "Les Celtes".
